Problem with first shots

I filmed about half a minute of the video in two of the inside locations on Thursday, this was around ten shots. I uploaded them onto an editing suite and started to organise them into the shots that I was going to keep and ones I wasn't going to use in the video.

Our media technician told me that the quality of my footage wasn't good enough to use in my video and that I would have to re-film if the finished video was going to be decent quality. I need to improve the lighting because what I was using in the two locations weren't strong enough. To resolve this, I am going to ask my boss if i can borrow her studio lights on the days that I am filming because they won't be in use over Christmas while we are closed.

I will be re-shooting all that I filmed last week again and hopefully the rest of the video over the Christmas break so I can spend as much time as I have left on editing.

2nd problem I have encountered

I planned on filming today (sunday 25th) but due to the rain this morning I have decided not too. I wanted the outdoor shots to look as bright as possible and if the ground has been rained on I think it will detract from this idea. The ideology of the outdoor shots was to capture a dry and fairly sunny/bright day so that it will sync with the emotions shown by the actor and the song at each point of film.  I will film at the next opportunity I get.

I'm still unable to shoot the indoor locations as well because the two/three that I wanted to film are still being re-decorated and I can't get to the house to shoot. The next chance I'll get to film when Amelia is free and the locations are finished is Wednesday afternoon. I have booked the afternoon off work soI can spend as long as I need to getting all the filming done so I can spend the rest of the week editing.

Costume

These are the two outfits Amelia will be wearing during the filming. The shirt on the right will be worn in the outdoor shots and the outfit on the left for the indoor shots.
Because there is no significant narrative within the video, I don't think I need to have the same outfit for each location I film in, however, I don't want a different one for every location because I think that would look a bit messy and there would be no link between all of the shots - so I have chosen to work with just two.
They are both casual and fit the genre of the music because they relate to the style of clothing the artist would wear.

Equipment

Camera: I have decided to use one of my own camera to film on because I think it will just be more convenient. I will have access to it all the time and wouldn't have to hire it from college meaning I am able to shoot whenever I can and when Amelia is available.

Using my camera also makes it easy to be able to take snap shots of anything I might want to photograph to put on my blog.

Other equipment I will use iof needed;
- tripod,
- reflector (for outdoor shots)
- studio lights and projector for shots 29 and 64 - 66,
- lights for shots 21, 23, 37, 44, 54- 56 and 59.

1st filming problem.

The first problem I have encountered is that two of the locations I was hoping to film in have been re-decorated and I am unable to use either of them at the moment.

This weekend (Sunday 25th) I hope to film most of the outdoor shots. I can't film on a Saturday because I work all day until after it gets dark and anytime after college it would be too dark to get the shot I would like from the outdoor locations so I have had a slow start to filming.
Hopefully, once I have got the outdoor shots and cut them together, the two indoor locations I am wanting to film in will be ready and in a similar state to how I wanted them before. Otherwise, I will have to find alternative locations or change the idea of the mise-en-scene that I originally wanted.

Ensure Amelia is aware of the risk and is really careful.
Burns from fire

Low
The fire is within a log burner so it is really unlikely that it will catch Amelia – but ensure we are careful when filming near it.
Fall into river
Amelia
Mild
Low
Whilst walking along the hill near the river, Amelia may slip and fall in so we would need to ensure she is careful and film on a day when the grass will be dry so there is less chance of her slipping.

comparison of the two videos

These are screen shots from the original video and our reconstruction, showing them together proves that most of the shots were accurate and the mise-en-scene is similar.

My Audience

My target audience will be Lucy Rose fans, they know what kind of conventions she uisually follows in her videos and also they like to get what they were expecting out of the artist. Therefore, I will engage in this and interpret my video similarly to Lucy Rose's style.

Evaluation of reconstruction task

Evaluation of induction task  -
At the start of the project we were able to get into groups that we would work in to develop the 30 second music video – everybody within the group gets on well, this was good for working together to try and create one piece of work. We didn't encounter any problems such as people not on and there isn’t a huge difference in peoples opinions and tastes so we all managed to agree on everything.
When it came to choosing a song and which storyboard to follow, we decided as a group that it would be better to choose a new song all together as  the videos that we potentially had to remake would have been difficult to shoot. One of the storyboards that someone had done was a music video filmed on a boat – this was virtually impossible for us to replicate and the shots were really long so it would have been quite dull at the quality we would have recreated it. The song that we chose to use had a video that had several similar shots that were filmed in different places that we thought we would be able to find and film in.
We tried to decide on someone that would play the artist in the video so asked a few people but everybody that we had asked said they didn't want too or couldn't  This was the first problem we encountered as we were on a short time scale and needed to get someone ready for filming on the Monday. I ended up been in the video because when it got to the day when we should have been filming, we still didn't have anybody and we needed to start filming. It worked quite well because I like the song and already knew the words so that was one less thing to worry about. We had already organised which locations we were going to film in so we could go straight to them and shoot quickly.
Most of the shots were quite basic but we encountered problems with shots; four, seven and twelve. Shot four was filmed in a car and I don’t have one so this wasn't possible. As an alternative we just filmed a walking shot in the gap where the car should have been. The lighting became a problem for shots seven and twelve because of the back-light from the window. There was no way around the back-light because the shot is composed just in front of the window, when we composed the shot we realised this and tried to get the lighting right just by closing blinds and changing the brightness of the lights but it was really difficult as I was just a silhouette and my features weren't clear so the shot didn't resemble the one from the real music video. We ended up getting some lights that are used in the green room to compensate the back-light and after moving them about a bit we were able to make my features appear in the shot in a similar way to how it has been done in the original video.
The only other problems we encountered were when it came to putting the shots together in the editing suite, we realised that we had filmed a couple of the shots at the wrong part of the song so the lip syncing didn’t match up properly. For one of them, we were able to just put a different shot over it because we’d filmed more than enough but the shot at the end where it cuts to a close up of the artists face, we had filmed the wrong part; the words were the same but because it was at the wrong part of the song, the video and audio didn’t match up so the end is slightly different to the actual music video. We managed to put one of the shots in front of the window where I’m just about to start talking in and it filled a gap where the lip syncing didn’t match.

These are two of the short interviews I conducted with classmates to get their reaction to the song itself, and a vague idea of what video type people would expect from this genre.

The response I got led to thinking that a performance based video would be most ftting for the song .
In responses, I also found, that the majority of people would prefer to see a performance based video anyway.

problems encountered whilst filming

When decided that shot 8 (in the car) wasn't going to be possible as I'm not insured to drive and in the original video, it is the artist that's driving. As an alternative, I was filmed just walking for the shot that would have been in the car .

Locations we have chosen to film in

Location:
Shot 1: Pond near Wilson
Shot 2,6 and 11: Bricknell Avenue
Shot 3 and 12: Oak 36
Shot 4 and 9: Outside college grounds near the gate.
Shot 5 and 10: Balcony Oak
Shot 7 and 8: Bricknell Avenue

storyboard for 30 second video

When trying to decide which storyboard we were going to use, we came across the problem of not having a mise-en-scene that we could replicate, for example, one of the videos was filmed on a boat.
We decided as a group that we could chose a song and create a new storyboard that we would be able to try and copy. The song/video that we chose was Middle of the Bed by Lucy Rose.

We thought about the different settings and decided where each shot was going to be filmed .. (on next post).

Influential texts

I am going to use these images to conduct feedback interviews with my audience to gather their psychographic preferences, opinions and values on what they expect from the video  ...

After listening to the song, what kind of style do you expect the video to follow and which of these images relates most to that style .

-would

-do you think the video would look good in black and white and would it suit the song?
-do you think a basic mise-en-scene such as the one in this image would be good for the video or does it need something more interesting?

-do you think a mise-en-scene such as this one would work well with the song or should it be filmed in a more natural setting like in the picture above?

Influential texts

This is the audio of my chosen song, I have uploaded it so I can play it to the people I am going to interview and see if they can visualise something similar to what I will be trying to film .

Lyrics to chosen song

If you can't see through it all
If you can't see that I'm here
Did the moment pass you by
Are the words out to try

Cause you were what i thought you thought i knew
I followed you so fast
Made me run and then i learned that taking time will make us last

Tell me if you love someone
She tells you how to live your life
Looking for something more
Don't wanna be nobody else
And you let them know that

It's not you
You're not afraid
Lines around your eyes will disappear

If you don't know where you go
If you won't leave til it's done
Tell me if there can't be won
I don't know where we should run

Watch and hear the noise it makes you smile
But it will make you burned
We're all rushing in around
Let's make it work and see what we have learned

Tell me if you love someone
She tells you how to live your life
Looking for something more
Don't wanna be nobody else
And you let them know that
It's not you
You're not afraid
Lines around your eyes will disappear

All of this falls down
All of this falls down
Words that will fall out
Faster than your running oh
And i heard that
Did you let them go to waste
The words they will fall out
Faster than your running oh
And i heard that
Did you let them

Tell me if you love someone
Do you love them all

She tells you how to live your life
Looking for something more
Don't wanna be nobody else
And you let them know that
It's not you
You're not afraid
Lines around your eyes will disappear

about the artist

Chosen song - Lines
Artist - Lucy Rose .

Lucy Rose is a 23 year old singer/songwriter from Warwickshire, signed to Columbia Records and has also contributed vocals on two of Bombay Bicycle Club's albums.
I have chosen to use of of her songs because I like her voice/music style and the genre that she falls within. I think I will be able to construct a music video based around an abstract style with this song which is what I wanted to do when I first chose this brief.

Audience key Terms

Qualitative data: The term qualitative data is used to describe certain types of information. This in media terms would mean desicions are based on information that has been collected according to the audiences likes/dislikes or preferences of a particular media text such as a music video.

Quantitative data: The term quantitative data is used to describe numerical data - it is measured or identified on a numerical scale. Numerical data can be analysed using statisticical methods, and results can be displayed using tables, charts, histograms and graphs.

Demographic data: Data based on statistics relating to particular groups.

Psychographic data: Data that is based on audiences personality, values, attitudes, interests and lifestyles .

Summary of summer work

Over summer I thought about which artist and what song I am going to use in my video and spent a while considering what kind of song I was going to choose.

I had to think about whether I wanted female/male vocals, a band or solo singer etc.
I chose to use a slower song because I think I will prefer filming and editing a more simple video and it could be quite difficult to keep it simple with a faster song.

I created a shot-by-shot storyboard showing a minutes worth of a music video that I thought may be similar to mine once I create it. This helped me get an idea of what I might put into my video and the different shots that can be used to go from each camera change.
(story boards on next post.)

I have decided to use a song called Lines, by Lucy Rose.

Conventions of a music video

this is a basic summary of the conventions for music videos;

Mise-en-scene: The mise-en-scene of a music video is really important because it usually relates to the lyrics and follows some kind of narrative that's relevant to the song . Costume reflects the genre of the artists work and the music so is an important factor to consider when filming .

Editing: Jump shots are often found in music videos because they are good for showing a quick change in scene. Transitions such as fade and dissolve are used to create different effects when cutting to different effects when cutting to a different scene.

Camera shots: a range of long shots, medium close ups anf close ups are usually found in music videos. Showing the subjects through all three shots emphasises the artists emotions as well as the location and setting of the video . Camera movement: music videos often have a mix of differen camera movements such as; pans, tilts, tracking shots and crane shots - these put together will make a video visually interesting.

Sound: the sound in a music video will be the song playing over the film clips. A conventional way to shoot videos that feature an artist is to have them miming the lyrics so the audio relates more closely with the video.
